Fáilte Isteach!
Welcome to St Peter's N.S, Snugboro. Our website is an important link with our school community and the wider community. We hope that our website provides you with the information that you seek about our school.

We have tried to give you a flavour of the very broad range of activities which usually take place on a daily/weekly/termly/annual basis.
We are a co-educational school which is approximately three kilometres from the town of Castlebar in County Mayo. Our pupils participate in many different activities that stem across all areas of the curriculum which we hope will provide each child with the opportunity to realise their potential.

We are very proud of our pupils' enthusiasm, engagement, creativity and curiosity in their learning.

We appreciate the support and good working relationship that staff enjoy with our pupils, parental body and Board of Management. We are grateful to our Parents Association Committee for its great work.
Ní neart go cur le chéile. (Together we are stronger.)

ETHOS

St. Peter’s National School is a Catholic school which accepts Catholic pupils. We also accept the children of no faith and of other denominations into our school and respect their beliefs/non-belief. As a staff we aim to create a happy, secure environment for our pupils in order to create - a) a positive learning ethos in which every pupil can grow and benefit from school, b) an atmosphere which helps pupils to become more self-disciplined and encourage good standards of behaviour. This will lead to a sense of good order and a reasonable approach to discipline.

SCHOOL HISTORY

The history of education in the Snugboro/Carrowbrinoge area goes back to the mid-nineteenth century. Children from surrounding areas who were interested in learning were taught by a travelling teacher at the rear of where McGough's house now stands. In winter they used McGough's barn. The teacher was paid in money and often by vegetables and poultry. Each time the travelling teacher came round families would take turns in keeping him in their homes.

Our School Grounds

At St. Peter's N.S. Snugboro we are lucky to have lots of space for all our pupils! To the left side of the school we have our "old pitch" perfect for lunchtime football and sports activities. To the front and right we have some yard space, basketball court, shelter and grassy area. To the rear of the school lies the playground and the "Daily Mile" where at least once each day our pupils walk or run laps of our track! Our track encircles our "big pitch" which is used by all classes throughout the year. Also behind the school we have our garden and polytunnel where the children have been busy planting, weeding and harvesting.

This school received a grant in 2021 to implement initiatives aimed at addressing the digital divide and support our learners at risk of educational disadvantage as a consequence, as part of the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) a project under the Recovery and Resilience Facility funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU. This funding was used to purchase digital equipment for use by the pupils and staff of St. Peter's N.S.
