We are delighted to have achieved our 10th Green Flag, with a focus on Global Citizenship – Food and Biodiversity.

This whole-school initiative involved pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class in practical, curriculum-linked activities exploring food, nature and biodiversity.

Children planted and cared for a wide variety of seeds, vegetables, herbs, flowers, bulbs and native trees, using our school grounds and polytunnel as living
classrooms. Pupils explored our local biodiversity through nature walks and surveys, identifying wildflowers, birds, insects, trees and other species within the school environment.

We worked to create and improve habitats by developing a bug hotel, wildflower pond, bird sanctuary, nesting boxes and bird-feeding areas. Pollinator-friendly plants were introduced throughout the school grounds to provide
valuable food and habitats for insects.
 

Growing our own food, from salad leaves and courgettes to carrots and potatoes, helped pupils understand where food comes from and the importance of caring for
the soil and natural environment.

 

The theme was embedded across the curriculum through SPHE, Art, Language, History, Geography, Maths and Science, allowing every class level to participate in
meaningful learning.
 

Older pupils mapped biodiversity across the school, created garden signage and produced artwork celebrating the biodiversity around us.

 

Through hands-on learning, pupils developed a greater understanding of the connections between food, biodiversity, healthy ecosystems and global citizenship.

Achieving our 10th Green Flag celebrates the enthusiasm and commitment of our pupils and staff and our ongoing determination to make our school a greener, more
biodiverse and environmentally responsible community.
